FAQ's: Where Can I Find Coupons For Healthy Foods & Products?

Something I hear people say pretty often is "The things I like to buy never go on sale or have coupons. It seems like everything you can get with coupons is junk food." And while it may be true that it is easier to coupon processed items, there are tons of coupons for healthy, natural, and even organic and gluten free foods. You just have to look a little harder for them.

I regularly use coupons and sales to get great deals on eggs, cereals, organic tomato products, whole wheat pasta, bagged salad, juices, yogurt, milk, frozen veggies, green cleaning products, organic soups, nuts, tuna, oatmeal, Kashi products and so much more. Publix also has BOGO (buy one, get one free) sales on certain produce items and can often have regional or local sales on their organic produce when they have a surplus, which sometimes makes them even cheaper than the non-organic items. Check out some of my weekly sales for specific items I get regularly and their coupon match ups.

Here are my five best suggestions for finding coupons for healthy, organic or natural products:
  • Facebook: If there is a certain name brand of product you love buying but hate paying full price for, it can really pay to "like" them on Facebook. A lot of manufacturers offer exclusive coupons to their Facebook friends and many times their promotions will go quickly so it can't hurt to see their posts in your feed.
    • Real life example: Justin loves Wholly Guacamole products but they are pretty pricey for only a few servings. I like them on Facebook and this past December they offered a promotion to their fans where if you sent them a Holiday card with a self addressed envelope they would mail you coupons for free products and $1.00 off. All in all, I got 2 free products and two $1 off coupons for the price of a stamp. I paired that with a Publix sale and we got 4 products for the regular price of one.

  • Manufacturer's Website: If a product doesn't have a Facebook page, you can always visit the manufacturer's website. (I would suggest this even if you do already like them on Facebook) Lots of websites will have a savings or a coupons page where you can print high value coupons. Sign up for their newsletter if they have one. That way they can send you coupons or let you know about sales and promotions ahead of time so you can take advantage and stock up.
    • Real life example: We love Kashi cereal. It costs $4.00 a box. I hate paying $4.00 a box. I get Kashi's newsletter and every few weeks I get sent a link to either print out high value coupons or to visit their website for coupons or free samples. Their samples are great (two full Kashi bars) and they almost always come with coupons.

  • RecycleBank.com: Recycle Bank is a website that promotes greener living. It is free to join and you can earn points through completing simple tasks on their website. These points can be redeemed for coupons and other types of rewards. You can sign up here.
    • Real life example: I regularly redeem my points for coupons like $2 off any Kashi product, $1/2 Bumble Bee tunas, $1 off any Earthbound produce item and many more.

  • Traditional Methods: Don't discount your Sunday paper or printable coupon websites for coupons on great products. Many times you can find high value coupons on healthy or natural products. Many of these products will have coupons with a higher value than those for non natural products to encourage people to buy these higher priced items. If you are someone who buys those natural or organic products on a regular basis, just using these coupons with or without a sale can help you save.
    • Real life example: We like to buy free range or organic eggs whenever possible. Eggland's Best puts out coupons in the paper on a regular basis. They are usually .35 off any of their eggs or .50 cents off their organic or cage free eggs. Just using these coupons whenever we need to buy eggs without a sale eventually adds up.

  • Follow Websites/Blogs: There are alot of blogs and websites completely dedicated to saving money on natural, organic, unprocessed and/or gluten free foods. Find one you like and read it regularly.
    • I personally like MoneySavingMom.com. She posts her healthy recipes for the week (many of which are dairy or gluten free) and highlights ways to make things at home or from scratch. She also has lots of tips for for finding coupons for these types of products. MoneySavingMom often links to GlutenFreelyFrugal.com which is constantly updated with where to find the best deals and sales on healthy and gluten free products.

Hopefully these tips can help you see that is possible to find deals on stuff other than junk food. You may not be able to get them for free or pennies on the dollar (although I do find that you can sometimes), at least you can save money on the things you are already buying : )

Publix Trip 1/27

Today's shopping trip was too big to fit into one picture which should make me feel a little bit better about the fact that I spent way more than normal. After a few straight weeks of not spending more than $30, today I spent $60. That may not sound like alot to some people but it has been awhile since I have seen that number at the register. I saved 64% this week and even though I ideally like to save at least 70%, I consider anything above 50% savings a success. When I think about how we used to spend at least $100 a week on a minimal amount of stuff (compared to what I got for $60 today), I am so thankful I started couponing.

Part of the reason I spent more than usual was that I got some higher priced items like laundry detergent and toilet paper. I also got a small pork tenderloin that was on sale as well as some fun frozen snacks for when we have people over on the weekends (Super Bowl). It was also a really good week at Publix for us and there were some pretty good sales on stuff that we have not bought since this summer and I wanted to get restocked on them.

Here is the breakdown:

Great Deals & Freebies At Target 1/25

Today has been quite a day. I found out this morning that one of my recipe posts was featured on a major website, then after school I got a pedicure with a Christmas gift certificate and on my way home I stopped at Target and saw the amazing news that they are renovating my Target to make it a Fresh Grocery Target. Top that off by finding great clearance deals and having an amazing cashier at Target who was above and beyond helpful and friendly about my coupons, and I am one happy girl.

After using my $3 off coupons, I got two shirts for $1 each

I went to Target to get a few freebies and was so happy to see that my store had them all in stock. I also found some clearance mark downs in the special Target Bodega section that paired nicely with some of my coupons. My Target registers don't round the coupons down so I ended up getting the whole price of the coupon off my purchase for my freebies. In total, I spent $19.71 for $81.89 worth of stuff meaning I saved $62.18 or 76%!

Here is the breakdown with coupon match ups:
  • 3 singles rolls of Up & Up paper towels, retails for .99 cents each
    • Used three $1 off Target.com printables
    • Made them all FREE
  • 4 travel size packages of Band Aids, retails for .97 cents each
    • Used four $1 off any size Band Aid product printables from SmartSource.com
    • Made them all FREE
  • 1 package of Reach Floss, retails for .97 cents
  • 3 boxes of Market Pantry Mac & Cheese, retails for .67 cents each
  • 2 Merona T-Shirts, retails for $8.00 each, on clerance for $4.00 each
    • Used two $3 off any Merona item from Target.com
    • Made them each $1.00
  • 2 bags of Alexia frozen sweet potatoes, retails for $3.59 each, price cut to $3.09 each
    • Used two $1 off manufacturer printables from their Facebook page
    • Stacked with two $1 off Target.com printables
    • Made them $1.09 each
  • 4 Bodega packages of Scrubbing Bubbles (each pack had 2 large bottles of Scrubbing Bubbles and one 6 use toilet cleaning stamp kit), retails for $4.99 each, marked down to $3.48, rang up $2.48 each
    • Used two $2/2 coupons from magazine insert booklets
    • Made each package $1.48 each
  • 1 Bodega double pack of Clean & Clear face wash, retails for $9.99, clearance for $6.98
    • Used two $2 off printables from the manufacturer website
    • Made the package $2.98 or $1.49 a bottle
  • 1 Herbal Essences spray hair gel, retails for $2.89 on clearance for $2.09
    • Used a $1 off coupon from the P&G 1/1
    • Made it $1.09
  • 1 Fusion Pro Series Face wash, retails for $3.99, marked down to $3.36
    • Used a $1 off coupon from the P&G 1/1
    • Made it $2.36 (not a great price, but Justin loves it and it doesn't go on sale often)
  • 5 Healthy Choice meals, retails for $2.89 each, marked down to $1.89 (or they rang up that)
    • In store promotion, B4G1 free (minus $1.89 off my bill)
    • Target.com printable for B2G1 free (the rang up as $2.89 off)
    • Two manufacturer coupons for .75/2 from the 1/1 SS
    • Made them .63 cents each! (the way this rang up confused me when I looked at my receipt but my store is under renovation and all the price tags weren't up on the ones I picked so I just went with it...)
All in all this was an amazing trip. I hadn't really couponed at Target in a month so I am glad I got back into it : )

Weight Watchers Version Of Red Lobster Biscuits

See if you can follow: this is a recipe I adapted from Pinterest that was already the Weight Watcher's version of Red Lobsters Cheddar Biscuits. Confusing? Maybe. Delicious? You bet.

I have never been to a Red Lobster (I am allergic to shellfish if that makes this more believable). I have, however, heard wonderful things about their Cheddar Biscuits. From their commercials alone, I can only imagine what they must taste like. These are amazing in and of themselves even if they are a lightened up version.

I pretty much had everything on hand in my stockpile to make these except for the Reduced Fat Bisquick. That required a special trip to the store but once I got the idea to make these nothing was going to stop me. Not even having to ask 5 different employees where this product was located.

It was well worth the effort. My version has a little less cheese than the original because as I was adding it it seemed like there was plenty of cheese.

These took a total of 5 minutes to whip up up and they made a perfect addition to our dinner of Cooking Light's Baked Potato Soup and salad. Pair this with the fact that I made WW Frozen Butterfingers Pie for dessert and my husband couldn't believe it was a Monday night at our house.

WW Cheddar Biscuits- 3 PointsPlus each
  • 2 cups reduced fat Bisquick
  • 3/4 cup low fat buttermilk
  • 1 cup low fat shredded cheddar cheese
  • 2 tablespoons diet margarine (I used Smart Balance)
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried parsley (I used the finely crushed)

1. Combine the baking mix, milk, and cheddar cheese in a medium bowl.

2. Mix with your hands until completely combined.

3. Form into balls about three tablespoons in size. I used an ice cream scoop that is three tablespoons.

4. Place them a few inches apart on a lightly sprayed baking sheet.

5. Bake at 350 degrees for about 15 minutes or until lightly brown.

6. While they are in the oven, melt the margarine and mix with garlic powder (I also added a little garlic salt).

7. Right when the biscuits come out of the oven brush them with melted margarine mixture and then sprinkle the crushed parsley on top. Serve hot.

Publix Buy Theirs, Get Ours Promo

Publix has a great promotion that starts with the new sale ad. I have not seen them do this since this summer so I am excited that it has been brought back this week. And it looks like the items included are pretty useful. If you buy any of the following products, you get the Publix brand for FREE.
  • Buy Swanson Chicken Broth 32oz for $2.69 and get the Publix version FREE
  • Buy Del Monte Leaf Spinach 13.5oz can for $1.39 and get the Publix version FREE
  • Buy Del Monte Whole New Potatoes 14.5oz can for $1.39 and get the Publix version FREE
  • Buy Del Monte Diced Tomatoes 14.5oz for $1.49 and get the Publix version FREE
You can only get one of each FREE item per trip. I will definitely be taking advantage of the chicken broth and diced tomatoes deal, especially since I have a Swansons coupon too.

Weight Watchers Frozen Butterfingers Pie

Have you tried my Butterfingers Cake recipe yet? If you have you know that while it is amazingly good, it must have one million calories per slice. So I decided to look for something along the same flavor lines but a little lighter. This Weight Watchers version (adapted from Pinterest) of Butterfingers Pie does the trick. It was light and very satisfying without being too crazy bad for you. And it let me use some of the Cool Whip I have stocked up from the holiday sales. According to the recipe I adapted it from, it is 3 points (the old ones not points plus) per serving.

After making it, I have a few suggestions. Make sure that the Cool Whip is completely thawed before trying to mix and spread it. It was difficult to get it to spread evenly over the graham crackers while still a little frozen. You may want to crush the candy bar in the wrapper then just cut off the top to sprinkle it out. We also found that the longer it is in the freezer the better it tastes. We ate it last night a few hours after it was made and it was very good but it was even better tonight.

Weight Watchers Butterfingers Pie
  • 8 graham crackers
  • 1 tub of fat free Cool Whip
  • 1 Butterfingers Bar
  • Reduced Fat Chocolate Syrup (the kind in the squeeze bottle was easier to control the amount)
  • Sugar Free Caramel Sauce (I also used the squeeze bottle, much easier to portion than the jar)
1. Lightly spray an 8x8 pan with cooking spray. Lay graham crackers on the bottom.

2. Mix together half the crushed Butterfingers and the Cool Whip and spread over the graham crackers.

3. Lightly drizzle the chocolate syrup and the caramel sauce over the Cool Whip mixture and top with the remaining crushed Butterfingers.

4. Freeze for at least 4 hours. Cut into 9 even portions before serving.

I jazzed up the plate for picture taking purposes. We clearly don't do that on a regular basis in our house.

Enjoy!

Couponing Our Way To A New Camera Update

Here is a little update on our progress in couponing our way to a new, higher end camera. We currently have $40 in Target gift cards to put towards our goal.
Here is where they came from:
  • $10 gift card: Ebates.com - cash back site, new users, click through this link and you can earn a $10 gift card if you make a purchase through Ebates in your first three months, mine came in the mail yesterday. I have also earned $41 in cash back (deposited into Pay Pal or sent in a check) since I started using Ebates 2 months ago.

  • $25 gift card: MyPoints.com, earn points for reading emails and shopping online, redeem points for gift cards

  • $5 gift card: earned through an in store promotion

It may not seem like much but it has barely been a month since we set this goal and I have also not been doing much Target shopping (to earn the promo cards) since we are pretty well stocked and putting money towards our house renovation projects. And since it is all "found money", I am excited to be saving for a camera without taking out of our pay checks : )

Publix Trip 1/19- Saved 83%!

This week was the first time since I started couponing that I actually did not "need" anything. If I had not been able to get to the grocery store this week we would have been just fine with our frozen chicken, frozen veggies, Smart Balance milk and Egg Whites supplemented by our stockpile. When I told Justin that he said he was really starting to see how much couponing is paying off and he said that I should just skip the store this week. However, there were some good deals I could not pass up adding to our stockpile and since I only spent $21 total, I don't feel too bad about it : )

Loaded Baked Potato Soup a'la Cooking Light

I was so impressed with how good this soup was. The picture definitely doesn't do it justice. I am planning on making it again in the next few days so I will attempt to get a better shot of it. This is a recipe adapted from Cooking Light magazine and it was so flavorful I could not tell it was lightened up at all.

We left off the bacon and I forgot to get the scallions for the topping but it was still delicious. I am going to try and substitute plain Greek yogurt for the reduced fat sour cream next time and see if it is still as good.

Here is the easy recipe.

Loaded Baked Potato Soup adapted from Cooking Light
  • 24 oz of red or gold potatoes, I just used a bag of the microwavable ones
  •  2 teaspoons of olive oil
  • 1/2 cup chopped onion
  • 1 1/4 cups fat-free, lower-sodium chicken broth
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups 1% low-fat milk, divided
  • 1/4 cup reduced-fat sour cream
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 3 bacon slices, halved (for topping)
  • shredded cheddar cheese (for topping)
  • 4 teaspoons thinly sliced green onions (for topping)
1) Pierce potatoes with a fork. Microwave on HIGH until tender. Let cool slightly and cut into bite sized pieces.

2) While potatoes cook, heat oil in a saucepan over medium-high heat. Add onion; sauté 3 minutes. Add broth. Combine flour and 1/2 cup milk; add to pan with 1 1/2 cups milk. Bring to a boil; stir often. Cook 1 minute. Remove from heat; stir in sour cream, salt, and pepper.

3) Return to heat and stir in potatoes. Cook until thickened. Top with bacon, cheese and scallions as desired.

Enjoy!

Taco Pie

I don't eat beef and I don't like Doritos (Justin argues I am un-American), but I love Taco Pie. I was a really picky eater growing up (still am) but this is one of my mom's recipes that I loved/still love. It is really easy too.  We pair it with a big salad and call it a meal.

Taco Pie:
  • 1 roll of refrigerated crescent roll dough (I actually think the reduced fat ones work best, less greasy)
  • 1 bag of Doritos
  • 2 pounds of lean ground beef
  • 1 packet of taco seasoning
  • water (half what the packet says)
  • 8 oz sour cream
  • 2 cups of shredded Cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup of shredded mozzarella (or more if you like)
1) Spray the bottom of a 9x13 pan with cooking spray and roll out the crescent dough to completely cover the bottom.

2) Cover the crescent roll dough with 1 cup of crushed Doritos.

3) Brown the ground beef and then drain. Add taco seasoning and the water (half of what the packet says to use). Simmer for 5 minutes. Add the sour cream and mix well.

4) Pour the ground beef over the crescent roll dough.

5) Top with shredded cheeses.

6) Completely cover with crushed Doritos.

7) Bake at 350 degrees for about 30 minutes or until top is browned and sides are bubbling. Let is sit for about 5 minutes before trying to cut and serve.

Enjoy!

Publix Trip 1/12

It was another interesting week for me at Publix. A decent amount of the things on my well planned out list were either out of stock or not priced or sized right to fit with advertised sales or coupons. I ended up not getting close to ten items on my list but I still stayed well within budget so I didn't mind too much.

I only spent $36 today and that included a few non sale/no coupons items that we wanted or needed for meals. Last week I ended up being around $50 total since I did go back to buy the lean ground beef on sale and 2 packs of the BOGO boneless, skinless chicken breasts. So I think 2012's grocery shopping has started out way better than it did in 2011. We were spending almost $100 a week on groceries alone, no stockpile or health and beauty items included.

Here is the breakdown of this week's trip:
Total retail value: $113.36
Total spent: $36.46
Total saved: $76.90
Percent Saved: 67%

Here is what I got with coupon match ups:
  • 4 Four packs of Dannon Activia yogurt, retails for $2.50 each, on sale for $2.00
  • 1 package of Udi's gluten free muffins, retails for $5.99
    • Used a coupon for a free Udi's product from a Facebook promotion
    • Made it FREE
  • 4 packets of Sunbird Seasonings, retails for .99 cents each, on sale for .95 cents each
    • Used two BOGO free printables from coupons.com
    • Stacked with two $1 off printables from coupons.com
    • Made them all free plus .10 cents of overage
  • 2 packets of Kikkoman seasoning, retails for .99 cents, on sale for .89 cents each
    • Used two $1 off printables from SmartSource.com
    • Made them all FREE plus .22 cents of overage
  • 1 bottle of Kikkoman Soy Sauce, retails for $1.29
  • 2 cans of Muir Glen organic tomato sauce, retails for .89 cents each
  • 4 pouches of Starkist tuna, retails for $3.19 each, BOGO ($1.59 each)
    • Used four .50 cents off printables from the Starkist Facebook page
    • Made them $1.09 each
  • 2 boxes of Green Giant Frozen veggies, retails for $1.99 each, BOGO (.99 cents each)
    • Used a .50/2 printable coupon
    • Made them .74 cents each
